League vs Finglas Wanderers, 26th Aug 09 27/08/2009
Finglas Wanderers 2 – 3 St Vincents DFC After the initial period of both teams wrestling to grasp the early initiative, Shane Keogh netted after Paul O'Callaghan set him up after being sent clear of the Wanderer's defence by an eloquent through ball from Stuart Foy. Shortly afterwards, substitute Jason Doyle, who had come on in place for Chris McGovern who came off with a hamstring injury, made an immediate impact with his persistent hounding of their defence. It paid off as he won the ball and sent Paul O'Callaghan free to slide the ball past the flailing keeper to put the blues 2-0 up. However we suffered a disruption to our momentum and focus as the initiative shifted with Finglas Wanderers. Their left back was causing havoc with his Rory Delap-esque throws and twice he was able to successfully guide the ball into the net, with the first one being met by his teammate who glanced his header past Rino Giglione. The second one was an unfortunate own goal by Geoff Foy who tried to clear it but could only divert the ball into his own net. The two teams went into half time 2-2 apeice. After a rollicking by manager Geoff Foy, the boys returned determined to make amends for their disappointing lapse in concentration which had allowed Finglas Wanderers back in the game. However both teams could not find a way past the two keepers and as the final whistle loomed they both looked on course to spare the spoils. However in a dramatic finish with less than 4 minutes to go, Shane Keogh's harmless cross made its way towards two defenders but in what must have been a mis-communication between the two, their hesitancy saw the ball end up at the feet of the profiting Paul O'Callaghan who simply slotted the ball into the back of the net. The Wanderers then went gung-ho in the remaining minutes but the blues held firm to bring home 3 points and to continue their winning start to life in Division 3a! First XI: Giglione, Archer, Wilson, Smyth, Doona, Green, S. Foy, G. Foy, Keogh, O'Callaghan and McGovern Subs: Doyle for McGovern, Moloney for Giglione and Milligan for Keogh Saturday Division 3A 22/08/09 23/08/2009
St Vincents DFC 3-1 Carndonagh AFC Carndonagh kicked off with the wind blowing on their backs. They went 1-0 up about 10 minutes in the game after a good move by their wingers when their right winger crossed the ball in and was met by their left winger who slammed the ball home. After 20 minutes of Carndonagh dominating, we began to come into the game and although we went into half-time still 1-0 down, we all felt it was only a matter of time until we scored cos it was evident we were fitter than them. That we did by putting 3 goals past them courtesy of Wilson (sort of!), Doyle and Maguire. It could have been 5 instead but for a great stop by their keeper and for the crossbar denying John Green. Starting XI: Giglione, Archer, Wilson, S.Foy, Johnson, Green, G.Foy, Maguire, Keogh, O'Callaghan and Doyle Subs: Dunne for Johnson, McGovern for Doyle (To view photos of the match, please visit our gallery) Umbro gear 19/08/2009
