However new players had been recruited since then and we were a different side now. And boy, did Tallaght Athletic know it as we rampaged through them, putting 6 goals past them without reply.

Rejuvenated by the defeat we suffered at the hands of Broombridge two days prior, our agenda was to play football and enjoy it. However the boys from Tallaght seemed to struggle to keep their discipline. The referee took the brunt of their verbal abuse and they lashed out at our players on more than one occasion. Inevitably the red card made an appearance in the later stages of the 2nd half and then duly reappeared twice during the remainder of the game as the boys from Tallaght lost control of themselves. This afforded us the luxury of being able to see out the game at cruise control. Joey Watson, John Smith, Keenan Byrne, Donal Lowry and Ross Byrne all got on the scoresheet.

All the subs were given a run out by manager Philip Ashmore so it was a good day at the office for everybody.

First XI: Keating, Edgeworth, Herlihy, Green, C Moloney, McMahon, R Byrne, J Watson, J Smyth, R Dunne and K Byrne.

Subs: Gannon (Keating), J Smyth (R Dunne) and Lowry (K Byrne).

Broombridge 6 – 3 St Vincent's DFC, 12th April

http://www.stvincentsdfc.com/1/post/2012/04/broombridge-6-3-st-vincents-dfc-12th-april.html

http://www.stvincentsdfc.com/1/post/2012/04/broombridge-6-3-st-vincents-dfc-12th-april.html#comments

Uncategorized

AUL Div3A Sat fixture, 12th April 2012 Broombridge 6 – 3 St Vincent's DFCFor our first midweek match of the season, we were pitted against our neighbours Broombridge FC who had not yet been beaten in the league. After the boys gathered at Pope John Paul Park, which is a stones throw away from our ground, we imposed ourselves on the game immediately. We looked to have Broombridge on the ropes inside the first twenty minutes as we raced into a two goal lead courtesy of goals from Keenan Byrne and John Smyth. It should have been more if we had been more clinical with our chances.

It's fair to say Broombridge aren't exactly a team brimming of youth, credit must be given where its due because their game plan revolved around their towering centre forward who was at least 6'5 tall and was complimented by his pacey wingers. They played to their strengths to maximum efficiency as their star player nodded in a corner before we restored our 2 goal cushion through Keenan Byrne again. However once again their striker demonstrated his aerial superiority as he got his head to a free kick that was whipped in and Roy Keating could only grasp at thin air as the ball floated into the top corner.

Although the scoreline was 3-2 in our favour by the time the half time whistle arrived, Broombridge had the bit between their teeth as they scored three goals within the first chaotic10 minutes of the second half to race into a 5-3 lead. From that point onwards, their unbeaten run didn't look like it would come to an end that night for they had the upper hand for the most part of the 2nd half.

To compound our misery, Damien McMahon was dismissed after collecting two yellow cards and with a one man advantage, Broombridge scored another goal before the referee brought the game to a depressing conclusion after we had such a promising start.

First XI: Keating, Green, McMahon, Herlihy, C Moloney, L Moloney, R Byrne, J Watson, J Smyth, K Byrne and J Smyth.

Subs: Edgeworth (J Smyth), R Dunne (Herlihy) and Gannon (L Moloney).

St Vincent's DFC 1 - 1 Finglas Wanderers AET (4-3 on penalties), Frank Roe Cup Rd2 , 31st March

http://www.stvincentsdfc.com/1/post/2012/04/st-vincents-dfc-1-1-finglas-wanderers-aet-4-3-on-penalties-frank-roe-cup-rd2-31st-march.html

http://www.stvincentsdfc.com/1/post/2012/04/st-vincents-dfc-1-1-finglas-wanderers-aet-4-3-on-penalties-frank-roe-cup-rd2-31st-march.html#comments

Uncategorized

Penalty shootout settles deadlock between St Vincent's DFC and Finglas Wanderers St Vincent's DFC produced a stellar performance to take Finglas Wanderers to a penalty shootout after neither side could find the winning goal to clinch victory in a tightly contested cup match. Although the boys in blue could call upon a 100% record over the Wanderers having beaten them twice in the league when the Wanderers graced division 3a Saturday in 2009/10, the contrast in their fortunes since then could not be more evident. While captain Smyth and co have had an indifferent league campaign which has them hoovering in the bottom half of Div 3a, the Finglas natives were enjoying a more productive season which saw them nicely perched on the top of the Division 3 league table.

Starting the match with only 10 men owing to the impending arrival of our midfield magician Ross Byrne who had informed the gaffer that he would be late due to a problem with public transport, the pressure was immediately heaped on the boys from the onset as Finglas Wanderers started the match with conviction with their bald midfielder pulling the strings with his diligent passes. It wasn't long before they threatened the goalframe of Roy Keating who had to be alert to tip the ball onto the post from a scorching drive from a Wanderers attacking move. However it wasn't always one way traffic in the opening period as Justin Smith had a typical goal poachers goal ruled out for a dubious offside call.

After the first 10 minutes, the introduction of late arrival Ross Byrne eliminated the one man advantage the Wanderers had over us and the game became much more evenly balanced with passages of play being enjoyed by both sides. Justin Smyth had a glorious chance to put his team ahead but somehow squandered his chance from a few yards out in front of an open goal. However much to his credit, he picked himself up and made himself busy by constantly pressurising the Finglas rearguard. Finglas were certainly not without chances too with their forward guilty of a horrendus miss which came as a massive relief to the boys.

It was more of the same in the second half but clear cut chances were hard to come by as the game became more tense. The respective defences of both sides were proving hard to get by until a slight concentration laspe by one of the Finglas defenders saw Justin Smyth race through only to see his effort snuffed but close in tow was Shane Edgeworth who had just come on as a sub, and the super sub duly seized upon the breaking ball to put it into the back of the net, sparking off frenzied celebrations from the home side who were very much the underdogs going into this match.

With less than 15 minutes remaining, John Green and Damien McMahon who had marshalled the St Vincent's defence superbly throughout the match instructed their fullbacks to be of ultra defensive mind. However disaster struck five minutes later as Finglas were awarded a penalty after the referee deemed Damien to be guilty of bringing their striker down in the box. The penalty was sent beyond the reach of Roy Keating and into the bottom corner to bring the scoreline back to level terms. There was no change to the scoreline at the end of normal time so the referee signaled for extra time to be played with 10 minutes each half.

Going into extra time, there were a handful of players who would find the extra time of 20 minutes a tolling task. However there was a strong sense of spirit in the spontanous huddle that occured just before the start of extra time that the boys would extract every ounce of energy to in our bid to progress onto the next round. However we suffered a huge blow when within the first few minutes of extra time, Damien McMahon collected his second yellow card of the day and was duly sent off. Following a reshuffle by Philip Ashmore, we recomposed ourself and were equal to the waves of attack from Finglas Wanderers who certainly had the momentum of the game. We saw out the remaining 20 minutes with some stubborn defending and an assured goalkeeping performance from Roy Keating. Against the run of play, we almost snatched it at the end when a Ross Byrne effort hit the post.

After the referee brought the extra time period to an end, a penalty shootout was required to decide which team would progress onto the next round of the Frank Roe cup. Before asking his players to volunteer to take penalties, manager Philip Ashmore gathered his players around and reassured them that irrespective of the outcome of the penalty shootout that he was proud of their performance against the high flying Finglas Wanderers. After the order of penalty takers was decided, Finglas Wanders were first up.

The order of penalties was as follows;

Finglas: Scored 1-0
St Vincent's: Ciarán Moloney scored 1-1
Finglas: Saved 1-1
St Vincent's: Ross Byrne scored 1-2
Finglas: Missed 1-2
St Vincents: Joey Watson penalty saved 1-2
Finglas: Scored 2-2
St Vincent's: John Smyth scored 2-3
Finglas: Scored 3-3
St Vincent's: John Green scored 3-4

Result: St Vincent's DFC 1 - 1 Finglas Wanderers (after extra time)
The penalty shootout ended 4-3 in St Vincent's favour.

1st XI: Keating, C Dunne, McMahon, Green, C Moloney, Maguire, R Byrne, J Watson, J Smyth (c), K Byrne and J Smyth.
Subs: Edgeworth, L Moloney, Lowry and Gannon

We would like to express our thanks to our injured striker, Raymond Watson, for putting this video clip together!!
 <div style=" margin-top: 10px;
